Adults who are over the age of 20 years may use the BMI ranges which are given on the online BMI calculator. But, the BMI ratio for children is calculated using the same method as used for adults, but the categories are not differentiated in the same way. Instead of predefined categories for underweight and overweight, generally children are compared with the children of same sex and age.

You should always keep this point in mind that BMI is used by doctors only to categorize your body weight and nothing else. There could be some other factors, which decide to your BMI value, and it can be that those factors are not related to the body weight. These factors include long period illnesses, which can give an underweight BMI, or some extra muscle mass, which contributes to have a high value of BMI.

After determining the BMI, a person should visit a doctor if you are not inside the normal range which is listed. The doctor could give you solutions so as to either gain your weight or even lose weight if required. A person should not go for weight loss or gain without visiting the doctor.
