Take extra fiber. Like high-fiber foods, fiber supplements appear to enhance weight loss and simultaneously reduce feelings of hunger.

If you’d like a fiber supplement, try psyllium seed, suggests James A. Duke, Ph.D. Psyllium seed is the main ingredient in the bulk-forming laxative Metamucil. He suggests taking 1 teaspoon of psyllium seed, mixed with juice or water, before every meal.

Count on chromium. At least one study suggests that chromium supplements can aid weight loss, provided they’re used in conjunction with regular exercise. In this study, researchers at the University of Texas at Austin divided 43 obese women into three groups. One group combined chromium supplementation (400 micrograms a day) with exercise. Another group took the same dosage of chromium but didn’t exercise. The third group combined a placebo with exercise. The women who took only chromium gained weight. On the other hand, those who took the supplement and exercised lost significantly more weight than those who took the placebo and exercised.

If you want to try chromium, take 400 micrograms a day, as in the study. And follow the exercise guidelines below. Doses above this amount should only be taken under medical supervision.
